CSKA "Septemvriysko zname" shirt issued to Petar Zhekov for the European Cup round of 32 second-leg clash against Panathinaikos. Game played in Athens on October 26, 1972. What is curious and remarkable about this clash between the Bulgarian and Greek champions, led by the great Ferenc Puskas, is that the second-leg game had to go through a replay. A month earlier, on September 27, when the "original" second leg was scheduled to take place, the game went all the way to a penalty shoot-out, where the referee made an absurd mistake in counting the goals scored and blow the final whistle giving CSKA the win. What makes this story even more comic is that at first the Greek side did not seem to have realized the mistake nor did the CSKA players. A day later, the referee admitted his mistake, and Panathinaikos filed a complaint with UEFA. After an 8-hour meeting, the headquarters came out with a decision that the match shall be canceled and had to be replayed on October 26. The shirt in our collection belonged to Petar Zhekov, nicknamed "The magnificant shooter". Given to as a present or swapped with the captain of Panathinaikos Georgios Gonios and comes from his personal collection. CSKA played both games in their home red shirts, while the white ones remained in reserve. Petar Zhekov scored the first goal for the 2:0 victory in the replay. The "Armymen" knocked out the Greek giants from the tournament (4:1 on aggregate) to face the great Ajax of Johan Cruyff, Arie Haan, Johan Neeskens, Ruud Kroll, Barry Hulshof, Gerardus Muren and Johnny Rep in the round of 16. Petar Zhekov is the first of, in total, three Bulgarians to ever win the European "Golden Boot" award - in 1969. Top goal scorer of the Bulgarian top flight league record 6 times. He netted 175 goals in 212 matches for CSKA as well as 22 goals in 45 games for the Bulgarian national team. Petar Zhekov is second in the all-time ranking for top goalscorers of the Bulgarian championship, behind Martin Kamburov.
